Biography
Just like beloved Mama Evangelist Dr. Bola Are, Minister (Mummy) Amaka Okwuoha, popularly known as Chioma Jesus is a Nigerian gospel artiste and songwriter who is renowned for her singing prowess in the Igbo dialect. A matriarch in the gospel music industry, she is also popularly known for the her hit song “Chioma” which was released in 2003. Chioma Jesus got the name ‘Chioma Jesus’ from the song ‘Chioma’ and decided to add Jesus to it. It is also the name of her debut album.
Chioma Jesus was born Amaka Ebizie on February 12, 1972, in Lagos but hails from Imo state. She lost her father and mother (Nze Euzebius Chukwumaeze Ebizie and Lolo Dorathy Ebizie) at a tender age, leaving seven children with her as the eldest among them. She started singing at the young age of 9 in her church choir. Her pastor helped her develop her singing talent. However, she officially started her singing career at the Scripture Union Fellowship many years ago as a soloist.
Her musical career rooted in the church through her church choir where she started singing at the age of 9. She later not only became a soloist but also a chorus leader in the Scripture Union Fellowship in her church. Although she wrote her first song in Yoruba, she mostly writes Igbo and sometimes, in English language.
Chioma Jesus became popular after her song, ‘Chioma Jesus‘ became a hit in 2003 and has been a household name in the Gospel-Afro genre of Nigeria. Her first song was written in Yoruba even though she is known for singing and writing her songs in Igbo. Her popularity soared in 2010 after her Delta Yadah Award nomination, an award she later won in 2011 and 2012. The Delta Yadah is an annual concert in Delta state which features professional gospel singers.
She released her biggest song ‘Praise’ in 2011 which topped gospel charts in Nigeria. She has worked with top gospel artistes like Sinach and Samsong and has over 20 songs to her name.
Some of the awards she has won include the Omega Legend Award as the most outstanding gospel artist in Nigeria, Advocate of Christian Excellence in Christianity, HFTBT Award for Transparency and Integrity in the Gospel Music Ministry.
